Integrating Android devices

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of putting pen onto paper for developing the Android vehicle tablet to work with OpenRemote.

The purpose of this is for Drivers to Log on and log off, Manage their allowed trip times and be compliant with the relevant laws.

In Australia, we have the Electronic Work Diary, which in America, and I believe Europe is known as ELD (Electronic Log Diary), which we want to deploy as part of OpenRemote.

The first questions I have are;

  • How would I go about setting up and pointing the first Android vehicle Tablet to our OpenRemote infrastructure, and how can I have the 2 interacting with each other?
  • Can the Android device operate offline to allow the drivers to still Log on/off, be compliant with the ELD based operations, etc. in the event the Tablet does not have Mobile coverage?
  • (This may be outside of OpenRemote) Is TCP connection recommended for Android Tablets dedicated to work with OpenRemote, and if so, how can a device with no native TCP configuration or similar be set to strictly point towards the OpenRemote platform and nothing else?

Thank you in advance,
Michael
